What is CRS Score and How it affects your Express Entry Application?

CRS or the Comprehensive Ranking System is the system of assigning ranks to the candidates in the Federal Express Entry pool based on several factors. Federal government conducts express entry draws every two weeks and candidates who meet and exceed the cut-off score set by the government receive their ITA (Invitation to Apply). Let’s break down the concept into different parts to gain an in-depth understanding about the process;

  1. What is Express Entry?

Federal Express Entry is a system installed by the Canadian Government in 2015 to regulate and effectively process the applications received by three federal immigration programs.  Express Entry System comprises of three programs;

    • Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
    • Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
    • Canadian Experienced Class (CEC)

The candidates must be first eligible to apply for the PR. Once the candidate completes his initial eligibility assessment and launches his profile into the express entry pool, he is awarded his CRS score which is a merit-based scoring system that ranks each candidate in the pool. The candidate then must wait for the express entry draws that take place approximately twice a month in which a cut-off will be announced. The candidate that scores the highest above the cut-off will be issued ITAs.

  1. How is CRS Score Calculated?

CRS score is awarded out of 1200 and is broken down into different section which in turn has different factors with maximum score that can be attained in each factor, finally giving a total score. These are four basic factors on which your profile will be scored;

    • Core/Human Capital Factors with a maximum score of 460 (with spouse) / 500 (without spouse).
    • Spouse or Common Law Factors with a maximum score of 40.
    • Skill Transferability Factors with a maximum score of 100.
    • Additional Points with a maximum score of 600

The scoring system has been designed in such a way that an applicant who gathers points on Spouse factors will not be able to out-balance a unmarried applicant.

  1. Is It Possible to Improve CRS score?

The one-word answer would be, Yes. You will be able to improve your score by fortifying your work experience and working on your education level. If you can manage to develop a valid work or education related connection to Canada that can also bring up your score. However, with time your age has the potential to absorb points and tip your scale towards the unfavorable side.

Minor changes aside, a big way to add to your CRS score would be to secure a Provincial Nomination. A candidate can apply for Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) from within the express entry system by submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) to your preferred province. If your profile meets the chosen province’s in-demand occupations list the candidate will be invited to create a profile through their selection system. If the candidate finally is nominated, he will be eligible for a massive 600 points.

So, in a nutshell, once you have launched your profile and is part of the pool, you can do the following to improve your CRS score.

    • Get a valid job offer by making use of the ‘Job Bank’.
    • Apply for vacancies in Canada using private-sector job boards.
    • Try to get nominated to any Provincial Nominee Program.
    • Improve your language score.
    • Improving your education.
    • Gaining more relevant work experience
